In the early 1800s, whalers and sealers used Bicheno's tiny picturesque
habour, called the Gulch, to shelter their boats. They also build
lookouts in the hills to watch for passing whales. These days,
fishing is still one of the town's major occupations, and if you
are down at the Gulch around lunch time, when all the fishing
boats return, you can buy fresh crayfish, abalone, oysters or
anything else caught that night straight from the boats. Tourism
is also very important to Bicheno; it's a lovely spot to stay
for a few days.
