Covering some of Tasmania's highest country, the Cradle Mountain - Lake St. Clair National Park, with its many lakes and mountain peaks, is famous for its magnificent alpine scenery. The rugged dolerite-capped mountain peaks of the park include Mt. Ossa, which at 1.616 m is the highest mountain in Tasmania. This park extends from Pencil Pine Creek, near Cradle Mountain, to Derwent Bridge, south of Lake St. Clair. Cradle Valley and Cynthia Bay on Lake St. Clair are linked by the 80 km Overland Track, one of Australia's best-known walking routes. Walkers should be well-equipped for extreme conditions.
