Devonport is divided down the middle by the Mersey River and before
1890 was known as Formby (West Devonport) and Torquay (East Devonport).
Devonport was formed in 1890 and took in the townships of Don,
Melrose, Aberdeen and Spreyton. Devonport Municipality began functioning
in early 1908 and was declared the City by The Prince of Wales
April 21st, 1981, making Ald. Kerry Berwick to the first Mayor.
Devonport is known as the top center of Tasmania. Its main industries
are Tourism and Agriculture.
