This park forms the central portion of the World Heritage Area. The Franklin River attracts wilderness adventurers from around the world and is considered to be one of the most challenging rafting rivers in Australia.
The Lyell Highway, which is the main route between Hobart and the West Coast, traverses the northern part of the park. A number of walkers leave from the Lyell Highway including Donaghys Hill Wilderness Walk, a short walk leaving the highway south of Collingwood River. It provides dramatic views of the Franklin River and Frenchmans Cap area.
