Flinders is the largest island in Bass Strait and major center
for the scattered chain of some 80 islands of extraordinary diversity
and beauty which lie between Cape Portland in north eastern Tasmania
and Wilsons Promonatory in Victoria. There are seabird islets,
seal rocks, lighthouse islands, grazing leases, historic sites
and various conservation, wildlife and scientific reserves. A
line from Gabo Island to Flinders to Eddystone Point in Tasmania
defines the eastern boundary of Bass Strait.
Flinders (137,400 ha), Cape Barren (44,500 ha) and Clarke (11,300
ha) Islands are largest of the 52 pieces of land in the Furneaux
Group. Flinders Island, with a population of about 1000, has two
main centers; Whitemark the capital on the west coast and Lady
Barron on the south coast, Grazing, fishing and tourism are the
chief industries. fine cattle and sheep graze island pastures.
Trawlers land hauls of scalefish and, in season, gourmet specials
- crayfish, abalone and scallops.
