Mt. Field, only 80 km from Hobart, was declared a nationalpark in 1916, which makes it one of Australia's oldest. The park is well known for its spectacular mountain scenery, alpine moorland, dense rainforest, lakes, abundant wildlife and spectacular waterfalls. The magnificent 40-meter Russell Falls is an easy 15-minute walk (the path is suitable for wheelchairs), and there are also easy walks to Lady Barron, Horseshoe and Marriotts falls as well as longer eight-hour bushwalks. With sufficient snow, there's cross-country and limited downhill skiing at Mt. Mawson.
