Richmond is just 24 km from Hobart and, with more than 50 buildings dating from the 19th century, is Tasmania's premier historic town. Straddling the Coal River, on the old route between Hobart and Port Arthur, Richmond was a strategic military post and convict station. Its famous and much-photographed bridge, built by convicts in 1823, is the oldest road bridge in Australia.
