In the center of Tasmania, rising abruptly 500 meters above the surrounding countryside, lies the area known as the Central Plateau. On the western section of this vast tableland are the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and the Central Plateau Conservation Area. With its striking landscape, alpine vegetation and hundreds of glacial lakes and tarns, this region is one of the most beautiful and unique in Tasmania.
The area known as the Walls of Jerusalem consists of five main mountain peaks - the "Walls". These enclose a basin of gently undulating hills covered with heaths and snow gums, and lakes fringed by groves of pencil pines.
Any of the main peaks can be easily climbed from within the Walls, rewarding the climber with panoramic views. The green of the grassy valleys directly below gives way to the browns and blues of the Plateau, with its thousands of pools and lakes. In the distance, the gaunt bluffs of the Plateau's edge and the mountains of the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park loom on the horizon.
Apart from bushwalking, enthusiasts enjoy other activities in
the area.
